Walt Disney’s “A Christmas Carol” 1st day movie launched as the top film in both U.S. and Canadian theaters this weekend with ticket sales of $31 million.
The “A Christmas Carol” a 3D adaptation of the Charles Dickens holiday tale, is Disney’s 6th top debut this year. Walt Disney Co. ranks 5th among the six major studios in U.S. ticket sales in 2009 with $1 billion as of Nov. 5, according to Box Office Mojo, a California-based researcher. “Up,” from Disney’s Pixar Animation Studios, is the top 3-D movie in the U.S. this year with $292.9 million.
“A Christmas Carol” is about a curmudgeon and his secular conversion and redemption after being visited by four ghosts on Christmas Eve. The book was first published on 19 December 1843 with illustrations by John Leech, and quickly met with commercial success and critical acclaim.
The tale has been viewed as an indictment of nineteenth century industrial capitalism and has been credited with returning the holiday to one of merriment and festivity in Britain and America after a period of sobriety and sombreness.
